It’s not necessarily related to distance. There’s a nice function from 3d space to the complex numbers that produces a trefoil as an inverse image of zero (all the points in R3 that get mapped to 0).

To see more of the structure you can take the inverse image of circles in C. That is, all points in R3 that get mapped to some circle centered at the origin. You get the different surfaces by varying the radius.
