I've have never figured out a way of doing implicit evaluation in 2D. But it *is* possible to repeatedly the fundamental domain until it covers any given screen coordinate, that's what I do here: https://www.shadertoy.com/view/3tsSzM
I’m on mobile now, I’ll check it out in a bit. I could try this but it seems expensive. Does it scale with the number of tiles? I was hoping for something instantaneous, or at least logarithmic in the number of tiles.

Not sure about exact runtime – definitely should be much much better than linear in # of tiles. I run to a max # of flips, and each flip is basically a constant factor more tiles that can be rendered.
