Russia and US are practically touching..

Yeah but almost nobody lives in the touching parts. I don't mean country-to-country boundary distance. I mean person to country. Or maybe person to person even. Like a Beijing citizen's vote in POTUS election would be distance to DC weighted.

i remember thinking of a nation-state as an interface between a set of rules and a (potentially non-contiguous) geographical territory
-
Sovereignty is a really toxic idea for both humans and nations, so we end up mitigating their effects with containment boundaries, but explicit interdependence mechanisms would be better.

That would be fascinating. People would try to build voting blocks to overthrow other governments (4chan, etc)

what would be the meaning of distance in this context? what's the alternative?
-
Proxy for likely stake, though an imperfect one. Atmospheric pollution is a simple example of local political decisions causing global externalities tht decay with distance.

Doesn’t work in reality. It’s hard enough to drag enough people out of apathy to vote in their own elections...let alone having to care about issues influencing a foreign election. Besides — people have no *real* skin in the game in foreign elections.

It's never been tried so how would you know.
