If there are no sighted men, how could the blind men in the fable know that they were in fact sensing pieces of a unified reality, the elephant? I suspect this is the main interesting problem in ontology now. It is not in fact self-evident that the universe is a unified reality.

Okay, I can't believe I'm attempting to get into this discussion within character limits but to me human consciousness seems like a heuristic and science is merely another game that the mind plays while seeking to perpetuate existence and understand reality

That’s definitely one popular view

Science is blind men comparing notes, walking around a bit more. Some religions are like one of the aggressive men claiming to have heard a trumpet sound asking him to translate it for the others as "I am the elephant." 1/

Some religions say no one or all together can never navigate, touch, describe and figure out the elephant but deep meditation etc. is the way to intuit from within--such advice being based on some who did and somewhat consistently said so 2/2
