Each font contains spacing information created by the font’s designer. Double space after a period essentially says “I know better than the person that designed this font”.

That was my first thought too... But presumably there are some limitations to eye tracking that require fixed-width fonts. And they *claim* that this is standard, and the result should be replicable with modern fonts...

Pure bs. The whole justification for single spacing is the move to variable width.
