One intriguing thing is the paradox of people who clearly are body-as-temple in some departments, like going for Greek-god/goddess physique, but also doing piercings/tattoos with aesthetics that don’t strike me as
“sacred”

When humanity “Killed God” they replaced Diety with all sorts of lesser ideals. Atheists and the like can try to define their own aesthetics and morality. Plus the triumph of the individual Ego as center of the universe in such a world.

Modern day bodybuilding is more about edginess and separating yourself from the pack than it is about body-as-temple. Aligns well with tattoo/piercing culture.

gotta have something sacred before you make it profane. there's no blasphemy in pissing on a urinal.

Idk. The sacred and the profane aren’t always as distant or separated from each other as either might want to make it seem....

Self abuse is complex & convoluted. Abused (or neglected) kids often become self-abusing adults both consciously & sub-consciously. There is a strong connection between childhood abuse & auto-immune diseases. The paradox is a conflict between the conscious & subconscious mind
