“Basket of deplorables” is actually a pretty good portfolio strategy. Most assholes are just assholes but some are on to something and it’s typically undervalued because of cloud of negative valence.

I used to use a version of this belief as a teenager to justify spending way too much time around assholes

Did you invest meaningfully though? It’s only worth it as an investment strategy. In every other way it is a costly brain-rot thing.

How does one meaningfully invest in assholes? I guess be civil enough to them that they share their insights/leads/etc?

Looking back on my experience, the assholes I knew were early gainers trapped on local maximas - they developed sharp wits from picking fights, but were ultimately stuck in arrested development - partially I think by being starved of other people’s more intimate thoughts/POVs etc

You don’t invest in them directly but in things they are paying attention to, preferably being actually worked by nicer people since deplorables tend to flame out early
