Easing back into doing public talks after taking ~2y off
Need a new stage persona. My current default of ‘energetic graceless chatterbox’ has insufficient gravitas and halo for 42+
Trying to decide between dark-and-brooding, avuncular-Bruce-Sterling-lite and MumblingGenius 🤔

Work back from yourself & the persona will manifest for itself. Aka don’t manufacture it.

Manufacture it all you want but you’ll oscillate between this awkward “Desired State VGR” vs. “Natural VGR”, only to default towards your natural self. Why? Over time, like anything, you’ll get change.

Have you never seen an actor or stand-up artist perform? 🤭😧

Point taken but they don’t stay in same character for 5-7 years at a time.

They’re pros, it’s just a hobby for the rest of us 🙂
“Natural” personality is often just a controlled stress response to being on stage. We can’t all have the acting range of day Hugh Laurie but we can have *some* fun based on the event mood.

Theater/improv actually helps regular people develop a more varied range to deliver different talks for different moods. It’s a pity more people don’t get some learning opps in them.
I’m with Keith Johnstone in believing it ought to be a basic middle/high school subject.

Understand your point. The argument reminds me of Zuck’s theory of dressing same way everyday. Expiring brain power on meaningless stuff takes away from important stuff.
Feel like expiring thought on fake persona takes away from your valued content.

Heh, my “valued content” is just more acting, only with words. I have like 4-5 different writing voices I play with 😂.
You gotta stop drilling for the authenticity man, there’s no there there. Masks and kayfabe all the way down, or rather round and round.
