You can obviously reshape the degree from high to low. Governments do it routinely. It’s the basic idea of all taxation Nobody is shooting for zero inequality except some extreme communists so that’s a straw man

2016 “settled” the debate - for the next 4-8 years at least. Inequality is a feature, not a bug for the people currently in power.

2008 settled that debate IMO. If that wasn't enough of a kick up the arse, with Democrats holding both houses to do something about it, then it was doomed to keep going exponential and reach critical mass.
