The literacy needed is not very different from literacy needed to navigate scholarly conflicts, and it’s a good thing that a broader group is getting trained on that, even if the edit wars are far less decorous

The minor cost is a bunch of newly-shallowly-informed people arguing with experts not used to being challenged at all The major benefit is overall higher knowledge levels, though at (acceptable) higher noise levels

I remember a remark of a friend of mine a few years ago about how on the schoolyard in the 80s you'd hear things like "under the teenage mutant ninja turtles's costumes are the new kids on the block" and there'd be no way to bullshit-check that. That's the Wikipedia difference.
