Very unlikely without democratic ideas. Who would be incentivized to willingly fight an uncapped pool of competitors. Completely counter to every aspect of human nature and consequently history. Tyrany has always been the preferred path given the possibility of pulling it off.

The SCA chooses its kings and queens by rite of combat. No real world political systems I can think of, because "follow the most violent one" is a notably bad way of choosing effective leadership. Provably worse than "that guy worked, let's try his eldest son".

That said, while there are no systems where it was ingrained into the rules, there are many noble lineages where that happened in practice. Lineage often went to the "most capable", such as Alfred the Great inheriting the throne of Wessex over his brother's male children.
