The American elite, while divided to a degree by partisanship and diverging culturally from the rest of America, are bound by ties of self congratulation and narcissistic self-regard.
I can only hope you’re right. I’ve been called “coastal elite” and I definitely don’t feel like it.

I’ve spent more time in the interior than coasts. 5.5 years in Ann Arbor, 2.5 in Ithaca, 1 in Austin, 2 in Rochester, NY, 2 in Vegas. But liberal college towns don’t count I think. They are honorary coastal places. So only Rochester and Vegas count by 2018 geographic logic.

There’s a lot of people who fit that profile. I think the term is best used for people who have a shot at clambering brazenly above the law and getting away with it. When nobody is supposed to be above the law, ‘elite‘ is measured by the brazen criminality you can get away with
