The American elite, while divided to a degree by partisanship and diverging culturally from the rest of America, are bound by ties of self congratulation and narcissistic self-regard.
No political class has a monopoly on being either good or evil, and no class culture is uniquely corrupting or elevating. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Powerlessness corrupts, and absolute powerlessness corrupts absolutely.

well...that insight seems central to the whole "what's actually good about us" project. liberal democracy is built around checks and balances and devolution of authority.
