But is clay == topsoil? afaik, clay is not cultivation friendly, and has high water runoff. so yes terracotta is modified natural substance, but not at the cost of arable land.

iirc from the kulhar debate in India, the soil is taken from agricultural land. Maneka Gandhi was campaiging about it at some point.

Usually when you figure out a way to preserve something for a much longer time than its biological cycle, it has some ecological side-effects.

In the craft/design world “organic” often refers to handmade naturalistic shapes, vs engineered/factory-assembled technical products - the latter coded as “advanced” here.

...and often (mis)used for flowy curvy shapes that may look/“feel” natural independent of process & materials. Eg - Gehry’s Bilbao may be described as an organic design by some, in contrast to more rectilinear/modernist/platonic buildings.
