Very poetic reflection but I wonder why google doesn’t just solve this problem by saving everything publicly in retrievable cold storage? Feels like a natural public service for them. Why do we need to rely on struggling nonprofits like wayback machine here?

Google has a terrible record at this sort of thing, eg they bought and killed the only usable Usenet archive. Would trust internet archive over them any day.

They tried to get into the archiving business when they used recaptcha to digitize a bunch of books. Turns out publishers hate that. Maybe only struggling nonprofits can do that because they are not seen as a threat to the publishing industry.
