This is evident btw, in Kissinger: “The conventional army loses if it does not win. The guerrilla wins if he does not lose.” First part is badly worded, but second part nails it: guerilla wins if he stays in the game at all, since the adversaries goal is to EnderWiggin them

I don’t think Carse talked about this, but there is such a thing as a dark infinite game, where goal is to continue the game with the opponent rendered invisible (by death if necessary). Total war/genocide are the extreme examples.

This philosophy seems inherent in some of the Filipino martial arts that have a guerrilla style e.g. Kalis Ilustrisimo. This is an art fought with blades. With each strike the goal isn’t necessarily to win but to do as much damage as possibly with the blade(s).

Parallel in Go. Black goes first and so has tempo advantage. White wins if it can neutralize the tempo. Black is always "challenger" status. Challenge is to disturb white's peace. White wins ties due to komi.
