If you have to beat a coerced retreat from public spaces to purely private joys in order to stay sane, I call that a joyless condition.

Not saying private joys are inconsequential. They're just present in every condition from wartime to slavery to general flourishing.
A general condition of joyfulness though, depends on thriving public spaces at all levels where humans inhabit a shared consciousness.
