Are there any strong real-world examples of academic or educational institutions formally setting themselves up as political resistance centers (like Xavier's school in X-Men or Hogwarts in last books of Harry Potter)?

hehe, actually that kinda works, but I'm looking for domestic examples. I suspect it's impossible to do it outside of an international hedge.

It depends on how strong the state is. In some sense, every European medieval monastery was resisting the power of emperors, kings, and other Kshatriyas—although they rarely came to blows, in part due to the monasteries’ powerful external allies.
