You could measure genius in terms of weight of history that must accumulate to make an average-competence gloss smarter than your original thoughts. An average working theoretical physicist at a decent univ could probably write a smarter Relativity 101 than Einstein today.

My bias is: more history+ordinary minds beats less history+ extraordinary minds. I’m agnostic on “greatness” opinions (I don’t find it useful to form them) but recent glosses on 100+ year old thoughts tend to benefit hugely from accumulated historically situated scrutiny
