GEB is ideally college or right after. It’s a bit dated now given recent advances so likely won’t have as much effect.

The Emperor's New Mind has some overlap with it but misses all the Hofstadter-ism and sinks into (admittedly respectable and physics-aware) consciousness woo near the end (Could also try I Am a Strangle Loop if you want)

Yeah ENM is a good read, though I'd say the overlap is actually quite low. Dennett's Consciousness Explained is closer if you can tolerate his writing style. The Dennet+Hofstadter Mind's I is what I read first and most prefer.
