I bought Godel, Escher, Bach 5 years ago. I think I may wait 5 more years for it to be just right.

GEB is ideally college or right after. It’s a bit dated now given recent advances so likely won’t have as much effect.

Any alternative recommendations to GEB? Was about to pick it up.

The Emperor's New Mind has some overlap with it but misses all the Hofstadter-ism and sinks into (admittedly respectable and physics-aware) consciousness woo near the end
(Could also try I Am a Strangle Loop if you want)

Yeah ENM is a good read, though I'd say the overlap is actually quite low.
Dennett's Consciousness Explained is closer if you can tolerate his writing style. The Dennet+Hofstadter Mind's I is what I read first and most prefer.
