I think the most important problem in US is the almost complete absence of a universal system of catastrophic insurance. It is sobering to see people living in the streets/cars/RVs (in LA, a LOT of people) because of medical bills or psychological problems.

Fractal commerce (emergent at every scale). The near-complete eradication of mom&pop stores and everything smaller. In Asia etc it provides a ladder for poor & up. The evidence is visible everywhere - from actual streets to the market.

A side effect for photographer/designer/product anthro types like me is the incredible (visible) vibrancy of city & street life. Completely absent in 99% of the US.
