Crushing student/PLUS loan debt and the scam of forcing students into courses ("core or major req") that they're forced to pay for that might have nothing to do with their career/interest. It's ruining people with no guaranteed ROI.

The impending and inevitable technocracy. Everyone seems to be flagging a part of that elephant -- e.g. Yudkowsky and AI risk. I haven't seen a holistic one since cyberpunk went out of style.

we're in the middle of a constitutional crisis and nobody is willing to even bring up the topic of a new constitutional convention because it's so obviously dreadful who the delegations would consist of and what damage they would do if allowed.
-
it seems impossible to come up with a set of, say, 100 people who a majority of americans would accept to write a new constitution... but what's the alternative? would we leave it to direct online voting?? would a convention just reveal that we have no reason left to stay united?

The ease in which a minority can veto any movement on an issue. Not that minorities can rule, but they can create gridlock far too easily. Fukuyama calls this Vetocracy in the Political Order series.

The red/blue partisan divide makes people encourage the worst behavior on the other side, and excuse bad behavior on their own side. Just as Satan keeps the church in business, the democrats and republicans need each other to justify their own awful existences.
