This idea of an empowering epistemology is fertile. What other examples besides gun and wellness culture? I'm bad at this mindset. I don't even do much prep for realistic threats in my environment (earthquake prep is probably wise in Seattle)

I don't think that's an empowering epistemology in terms of the article I tweeted. It doesn't come from a sense of an empowerment deficit (crime and toxins all around that you're helpless against)

Semi related - cognitive bias, we worry way too much about horrible improbable and not enough about near certain avoidable. Net net forget earthquakes and terrorists just get yourself to the gym and spend time with friends

In Germany there is a vivid Reichsbürger culture: People believe the government is not legit and everyone can/should claim their own nation state. Not paying taxes, issuing their own laws... probably feels very empowering.
