PG’s “Keep Your Identity Small” essay unwittingly gets at basic reason why identity politics exists. “Small identity” in sociology is like “thin client” in computing. It needs a compatible fat cloud.
No prizes for guessing what sets identity size lower limit in a given society.

I don’t think he’s smug. He’s a sincere guy, just very narrow in his information sources and too quick to tune out adversarial signals as uncivil noise.
