PG’s “Keep Your Identity Small” essay unwittingly gets at basic reason why identity politics exists. “Small identity” in sociology is like “thin client” in computing. It needs a compatible fat cloud. No prizes for guessing what sets identity size lower limit in a given society.

That gets at another interesting aspect: minimal identity comprises precisely those beliefs that are hard to outsource to electric monks. An electric monk can believe things about javascript for you (opinionated frameworks) but not (for instance) that “Mormons are oppressed”
