Whoa, only 5% in and already my view of emotions has been paradigm-shifted by book How Emotions Are Made amzn.to/2HDPN6D thanks whoever recommended it
This constructivist theory of emotion is the relativity theory required to understand identity politics

Might not be relevant but afaict this contradicts a lot stuff that seems more solid. Check out amazon.com/Archaeology-Mi

That seems to represent the classical theory of emotion that Barrett’s book debunks pretty convincingly in the first 5%.

Could you post some specific claims? Panksepp shows how there are core, "primitive" emotional responses and behaviors that are shared. He does not argue against more complex emotions or emotional regulation being more constructivist

Too hard to summarize. Read the book if you’re interested.

Ok I read first 5%. This is more pop neuro than Panksepp so maybe unfair to compare. I don't see much contradiction. Simplification, yes. Also perhaps attacking a strawman of classic neuro. Or perhaps Panksepp is not classic neuro. Eg he would not consider Happy or Angry as core

Specifically on the topic of FEAR, as I read some of Barrett on that... Amygdala is no longer considered the critical or central generator of fear. So that critique is either out of date or strawman

Not a strawman. I see it time and again in serious writing and it is implied back in Darwin etc. And the broader point is a static structure-function coupling view of emotion (firmware so to speak) as opposed to a more programmable software view.
My read of the evidence is that there is a static firmware piece. But, at least for humans, there is a huge programmable piece. Much of which seems to not even be composed of the firmware pieces.
