I've learned over time that the heart of conservatism is: a flame that must be kept alive, that all would recognize. It's earnesty, with different flames for different cults, but they do all believe that at core. There's actually not much pessimism/realism (to their detriment).

the "guilty" are typically serial in their harmful behavior, so the ten guilty vs one innocent point ultimately harms ten times or more as many innocents it is about projecting a righteous yet powerless reputation for the state, not for securing justice or giving protection
