“First impressions in Australia indicated that smokers feel that cigarettes taste worse in plain packaging – an unexpected side effect.” Wonder if the tech-is-addiction evangelists could redesign social media UXes in “plain packaging” that is distinct from just failed design.

simple packaging on the web has an enormous potential for a beautiful aesthetic then again, there's a fine line between "plain" and geocities

I guess you succeeded in helping people with their twitter addiction if you made it so perfectly unpalatable?

Seems like detail worth noting that presumably (at least I imagine) cigarettes would be consumed in relative proximity to their packaging in a way that might not happen for some other items. Ex. packaging of food maybe less relevant to that experience vs plates you eat it off of.

Maybe that’s just a simple relocation of function of packaging onto other equivalent contextual elements, but made me curious about how packaging could mean different things in different contexts.

Monochromatic applications would accomplish this. I put my phone in greyscale and it curbs a lot of my app usage by removing the red in notifications (or that's my theory).

Even w/o greyscale just using a different color than red/yellow/orange for notification flags would probably do a lot.
