Did you ever read any Oscar Wilde? The Importance Of Being Earnest is coming to mind. A lot of cynical, sarcastic humor but I felt like there's an underlying idealism, disguised in all that wit and snark. "Shitposter with a secret heart of gold" is a reliably endearing trope

Why retire? When using weapons, you only ever get better with practise. When your weapon is the use of words, then the longer you live, the more effective you become.
