Very interesting. I've seen discussion of the idea as far back as Clay Shirky's 2008 comments about filter failure, and the discussion obvious starts with Toffler's "Future Shock," but I somehow hadn't seen this specific comparison until this tweet.

I don't think it's useful to go that far back... ddos is a very specific metaphor that is actionable in botnet form factor by malicious actors. Toffler and Shirky's models aren't about malicious action.

actually, it might've been a RAND phrase. Maybe Rand Waltzman, he and I have chatted about this and he's been at it for a long time..."cognitive security" i think is his.
