I think of my grandparents who lived through the Depression. They had attitudes and habits related to living through the Depression, even in their later years. Early experiences tend to shape a person.

I think most people who change class update their attitudes and habits in a hodge-podge sort of way. The usual systematic version is a 2-generation project, where the children of the first generation grow up around peers of the new class, new geographical and cultural context.

Yeah, money. Give poor people money, and they'll start having middle class attitudes.

A lot of the difference is about which futures your resources allow you to imagine, plus future discounting. There's always some individual variance in habits within classes but I wouldn't expect someone in abject poverty to see saving and investing in education as good bets.
