Fwded it to my cuz who immi'd in 1987. His response: Not sure US ever had any cultural openness. Even if it did, it was mostly WASP. Eating 🍣 + doing🧘🏼‍♀️ != cultural openness. More like cultural pastimes. What it does represent is economic openness. That is its greatness.

I think your cousin is wrong :) Wasp culture is in fact among the least open. The separation between economic and cultural openness is meaningless. Not surprisingly we’re seeing both kinds of closing up now together.

Noted though the determinism doesn't sit well w/me. From my POV there are economic constructions of culture and vice-versa that when distributed through TV funnel results in that epic magnetizing effect. Have you watched this? I think you will like :) youtu.be/zKgVSTKVtak
