Fwded it to my cuz who immi'd in 1987. His response:
Not sure US ever had any cultural openness. Even if it did, it was mostly WASP.
Eating 🍣 + doing🧘🏼♀️ != cultural openness. More like cultural pastimes.
What it does represent is economic openness. That is its greatness.

I think your cousin is wrong :)
Wasp culture is in fact among the least open.
The separation between economic and cultural openness is meaningless. Not surprisingly we’re seeing both kinds of closing up now together.

Too small to occupy "global consciousnesses" space?
For me it satisfies spiritual hunger <> cultural openness but I guess a sense of relative calm is required for 2nd world sweet spottedness...

How much of this do you attribute to the current POTUS / admin's anti-immig policies & how much to a real long-term trend. I suspect, the momentum from the last several decades will be sufficient to carry it past, what I believe is a temporary dip...

Definitely a real long-term trend. Minimum 25 year phase of the cycle now I think. Because it’s not just happening to the US.

Consider the differences between the Germans who did immigrate vs the ones who didn’t. I suspect you’ll find a strong personality difference.
