I often have DM conversations going on with the *same* person in like 3 different places (none of them email; the usual mix is FB, twitter, slack). Its kinda ridiculous.

You shouldn't have skipped that multithreading update. :) Add that to the list of new ideas of the recent age - being able to have several conversations with the same person at once.

Still, having control over timing and multiplexing of near-real-time conversations is a rather recent ability. Not sure if it makes people smarter (more time to think the answer through) or dumber (less need to think quickly and correctly at once).

The one good reason I can think of for having 3rd parties handle multiplexing is security sensitivity. Financial and health related messaging should be more secure than random shitposting.
