Most Americans think that they won the war against Hitler (and not the Soviet Union), that they didn't start the Vietnam and Afghan war, or that Putin stole the elections. I wouldn't call people idiots, but media spin generally works.

That's my point. People believe what they're motivated to. It isn't spin, it is people. The spin follows rather than leadsvthe prejudices.
Here, conservatives *want* to believe liberals are unpatriotic.
Most media seem to be on a mission, not just to follow public opinion, but to shape it. Incidentally, that is also why people fund and buy media.

Sure. And it works well in narrow cases full of esoteric facts like climate science or tobacco. Not so much when it's basic tribalism. There they can only be fuel not spark.
