I don’t think noting that Kim Jong-Un’s sister beats Pence on TV charisma counts as supporting North Korea over the US. It’s merely observing skill at optics.

appearances are effective insofar as people react to them -- how differently would people remember this if media said the opposite?

The media are all about appearances, and the meta discourse is about appearances of appearances. The best way of resolving that kind of discourse is probably to stay out of it.
