How many truly distinct global consciousnesses exist, as in a planetary-scale ethos of being?
I count only 2: American and Japanese. The USSR almost got there but didn’t.
Europe, even at peak colonialism, remained continental-parochial. China seems headed that way too.

Nope that's a European conceit. Boundary stopped at Persia. Nothing before ~1600 or more conservatively WW2. The world was just not known and integrated enough.
