How many truly distinct global consciousnesses exist, as in a planetary-scale ethos of being? I count only 2: American and Japanese. The USSR almost got there but didn’t. Europe, even at peak colonialism, remained continental-parochial. China seems headed that way too.

Too old and confined. Never got to the US or East Asia at its universalist peak (11th/12th century) so doesn’t qualify. Modern version is a pale shadow.

I don't understand the question from the examples. US is notable for its exceptionalism in everything, and Japan is anything but global

It is global in its economic (and once, military) ambitions and cultural soft power. Toyota, Sony are global. Manga, anime are global in appeal.
