How many truly distinct global consciousnesses exist, as in a planetary-scale ethos of being? I count only 2: American and Japanese. The USSR almost got there but didn’t. Europe, even at peak colonialism, remained continental-parochial. China seems headed that way too.

It’s not a specific thing. More an impression I get from things like manga, their unique way of doing UI/UX, invention of emoji etc The symptom might be a signature way of dealing with modernity. America goes big. Japan goes weird. Others follow some mix of the two.

It might be because it's an island nation. We either go completely insular, and don't see beyond the shoreline, or we go completely outwards and welcome the world.
