What would happen if parents only gave children temporary code names and you had to choose your own name at 18?
It is really weird that we don't name ourselves, if you think about it.

You can legally change your name. As a features reporter, I once interviewed a dozen people who had done so. Takes guts, but seemed very American - taking self-invention to another level. They all seemed happy.

I deliberately choose my name at 18 for that reason, my choice of name not someone else's.

It's actually something i asked every trans person i had a real conversation with - why did you pick that name? Unsurprisingly (in retrospect), the answers had nothing in common.
