What was foolish and wasteful is all those old test launches with dull test payloads. You don’t want to risk a multimillion dollar satellite on an untested launcher. Why foolishly waste opportunity for fun?

I'll admit I thought it was kind of dumb--right up until I saw the pictures. Then I showed my kid an image that looks like a whimsical screensaver from 1998 and said "That's in space right now." That's not just cool, it's magical.
