I truly don’t get how half of humanity seems to get by with no discernible life of the mind. I imagine meat-eaters must react to vegetarians like me the way I react to people like that.

Are you puzzled by how they are able to survive economically without engaging in any participation in knowledge work or befuddled by lack of impetus in engaging in contemplative rumination and armchair thinking? Either ways, tempted to go full on SJW on you right now.

No, I don’t mean knowledge. Most of the people I’m thinking of are educated, do knowledge work, and are smart. I mean they take no pleasure in mental life. It’s just a means to non-mental ends.

Metacognition not an easy default state to learn, let alone be comfortable in, esp. when attn attacked by so many non-mental stimuli. I compare the skill to learning to drive where hand-foot-eye coordination is learnt through force (licensing) and clear incentives.(mobility)

If Metacognition::Driving Licensing = Some set of rules to think about thinking without destroying oneself. Incentives = Cognitive Mobility i.e. getting to mental places that offer visceral pleasure

Align that with social mobility means some Neurologically-controlled VR world where mental work = perceived and shared social value.

The 16-year old passing driving test and getting own car equivalent would be same kid passing metacognitive licensing to be eligible to get Neuralink set and mindtrip through expanses of his/her consciousness.
