One reason I don’t share subculturalist disdain for “normies” is that though they may be more aware of ongoing change in parts of zeitgeist, normies are generally adapting better to it overall
In terms of adaptive success, I suspect edgy subcultures are no better than luddites

This reminds me of how “emo” is essentially the same as it was back when I was in high school. Everyone still wears black and rainbow, band tees, skulls, and listens to post-hardcore. Many examples of this: juggalos, metalheads, certain religious groups.

I don’t really keep up with music stuff, so I have no idea what any of this means 🙂

But wouldn't you say that Silicon Valley was once an edgy subculture that has become normie?

I feel like all the cultural fetishes of Normie culture are Wylie Coyote walking on air past the cliff. More people watched the League of Legends championships than the NBA Finals and World Series combined.

Normies are (by definition?) the best adapters in a stable state though, they always take the path of least resistance professionally and culturally

Normies aren't adjusting to technological or social change very well at all. The vast majority of people are terrified, regardless of their politics. I think very few are really adapting well, mainly just the smart & highly privileged, for whom change is mostly non-threatening.
