I spend a lot of time with the boar hunters. This helps me understand the others. The allegiance and tribalism I've seen amongst men (within and beyond Twitter) has been so baffling to me. Not condemning - I just have not been able to relate.

There are basically two kinds of personas guys inhabit in their 20s “Be my leader” types looking to lose themselves in a tribe and relate as unequals in a hierarchy “Let’s go hunt together, I know where there’s some nice wild boar” types, looking to relate as equals in a band

It’s not actually that different from stereotypically feminine modes of relating Happened to catch a bit of the Bachelorette once, and though all the guys were cut and studly, their behavior seemed off to me... then my wife remarked: they’re acting like a bunch of mean girls

In fact “bro” culture is kinda feminine in its approach to navigating hierarchies. Straight-up alpha dominance behavior doesn’t really work in modern work except maybe in military. So they find a way to blend “feminine” tactics with overcompensation via masculinity signaling
