We act like the information society is at a primordial soup stage, pre DNA, with memes in isolation as the main organic form. We're closer to a middle ages. Memes are sewage within a much evolved built info-environment. Which we don't see because of a fish-in-water effect.

when i got on around 1996, it was all about the messageboards and webrings – people building little stone shrines to their favorite interests, giving each other badly jpg'd awards, signing each other's guestbooks. i guess that was already past the primordial soup stage
