Have you DIYed something from Home Depot level materials that most people buy? Something essential and important, not artisan crapjects (eg. a house, a car, a computer, plumbing or electrical system...) What was it and was it financially worth it? (not spiritually)

Replaced car transmissions, built desks & a patio table, rebuilt our pantry/garage, constructed raised garden beds (all helping my dad).

My dad was the lead technician of a pack of refugee camp kids who defused bombs and stole wire. He was 8 or 9 years old. He was a genius.
