An interesting test of what kind of writer you are is whether you naturally gravitate to low culture or high culture references/examples when both are available and you know about both

heh that's a side benefit, main reason is to stick it to uppity types
You have to do more than de-jargonify. That often smacks of "popularization" or patronizing/dumbing down. You have to find alternate roots for an idea in pop culture.

How much of this is really personal rather than a product of surrounding environment? I find myself thinking in terms of low cultural references more often than I write about them since I’ve been so extensively conditioned to produce academic writing.

A lot. Takes a lot of words to be your own conditioning environment. You don't reach escape velocity from training contexts till like 300,000 words
