I grew up in what you might call 1:1 unequal-quality mixed-income housing (single family homes with live-in servant quarters). Common middle-class pattern in company-town India.

More recent in America than people think. Most NYC Brownstones have separate entrances for servant quarters beneath the stoops. It was common in middle-class suburbia even through the 1960s.
Apparently, appliances put maids out of work. Are appliances not widespread in India?

Where electricity is reliable, washing machines are common. Dishwashers, vacuums, not so much.
