I live in an apartment in a brownstone in brooklyn that was almost certainly created to be a live-in servant's apartment in the original intended usage of the building. in the 1880s, when it was built, this pattern was prevalent.

More recent in America than people think. Most NYC Brownstones have separate entrances for servant quarters beneath the stoops. It was common in middle-class suburbia even through the 1960s. Apparently, appliances put maids out of work. Are appliances not widespread in India?

In my limited experience, maids rarely wash clothes nowadays. But they still wash dishes, cook, and mop floors.
