can I suggest an alternate hypothesis because I do think that cultural healing is possible? an event of significant shared purpose heals cultural rifts in 1 generation. if things feel especially bad now it's because we haven't had a significant shared purpose in while.

Seems too neat / linear. Look at Northern Ireland peace process for a counter-factual. Also, how do we define "healed". Absence of violence? Absence of hate speech? To what baseline level? Do we exclude 4Chan and Reddit as outliers?
